Miley Cyrus struggled to work out what her own opinions were after spending so much time trying to cultivate a positive image.

Miley Cyrus struggled to work out if she had her own opinions.

The 19-year-old star – who shot to fame after appearing in Disney show ‘Hannah Montana’ when she was just 12 years old – spent so long trying to cultivate an ”All-American” image that she eventually needed to take a step back and figure out what she really wanted to say for herself.

She said: ”I feel I was so trained in my interviews to be All-American or whatever. I just got so set in the way of saying the same things I did when I was 12 years old.

”I had to smile so much and I had to say so much of the same thing. I finally had to look inside and say, ‘What do I really think about this? Do I really think that or am I just trained to say that? Or have I said it for so many years now that that’s what people expect me to say, so now I say it so I don’t have to say something else and be creative?

”I guess I kind of realised that my whole life isn’t one giant press junket. I don’t have to be smiling all the time and always have the perfect answer.”

Miley – who is dating her ‘The Last Song’ co-star Liam Hemsworth – also admitted she can’t understand why people have been critical of her racy outfits and thinks it is because they are ”scared” by her self-confidence.

Speaking on ‘The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet’, she said: ”People are so scared of seeing a woman being like, ‘This is who I am and you’re not going to change it.”

And while the singer-and-actress – whose father is country star Billy Ray Cyrus – never set out to be a sex symbol, she is happy for people to find her attractive.

She added: ”If people find that [I am a sex symbol], I take it as a compliment. Thank you for thinking I’m sexy!”

She loves wearing hot pants and showing off her toned tummy, but Miley Cyrus insists she didn’t set out to become sex symbol.

“If people find that [I am], I take it as a compliment,” the 19-year-old singer and actress said on Lifetime’s The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet Thursday. “Thank you for thinking I’m sexy!”

When she first began to dress and act more provocatively, the former child star was surprised by the immediate backlash. “People are so scared of seeing a woman being like, ‘This is who I am and you’re not going to change it,’” Cyrus explained.

During her final season of Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, where Cyrus played a squeaky clean high school student who masqueraded as a pop star with the aid of a blonde wig, Cyrus decided to release her raciest single to date, “Can’t Be Tamed.”

“Even just the title of that, for a woman to say she can’t be tamed. . . for a woman in the world with my face saying ‘I can’t be tamed’ when that’s really all people wanted to do, I think proves how sexist people still really are,” Cyrus mused.

Growing up in the spotlight wasn’t always easy for the singer, whose father Billy Ray Cyrus had been a country music star her entire life.

“I feel I was so trained in my interviews to be All-American or whatever,” Cyrus revealed. “I just got so set in the way of saying the same things I did when I was 12 years old. . . I guess I kind of realized that my whole life isn’t one giant press junket. I don’t have to be smiling all the time and always have the perfect answer.”

Cyrus eventually began to crave solitude “because I had to smile so much and I had to say so much of the same thing,” she admitted. “I finally had to look inside and say, ‘What do I really think about this? Do I really that or am I just trained to say that? Or have I said it for so many years now that that’s what people expect me to say, so now I say it so I don’t have to say something else and be creative?”

The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet airs Thursdays at 11 p.m. EST on Lifetime.

Miley Cyrus may be madly in love with her current beau Liam Hemsworth, but it was former flame Nick Jonas who really put her heart through the ringer.

On Amanda de Cadanet‘s new Lifetime series The Conversation, she asked the 19-year-old “Party in the USA” singer if she could give any advice to her 14-year-old self, what would it be? While Miley admitted to “sweating the small stuff” too much back then, it was the words of her dad Billy Ray Cyrus that she really takes into account these days.

What advice was that, exactly?

“This too shall pass. It’s not the end of the world. It’s not the end of the world until there’s no more pulse, you know what I mean? You’ve gotta keep going. Its something I always tell myself its generic but its true its a big something to remember.”

She also opened up about her relationship with the 19-year-old Jonas Brother, Nick, who she dated from June 2006 to early 2008, saying:

“I had my biggest heartbreak when I was 14. I was in love with somebody. I was in love with this person, I thought the rest of my life is ruined because he doesn’t love me back. He doesn’t think I’m pretty then I’m not pretty. He doesn’t think I’m worth his time then I’m not.”

Looks like she is doing just fine these days, thanks to her hunky BF, the 22-year-old Hunger Games star Liam.
